The basic rights that people are afforded in the United States are often taken for granted. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin certainly know the value of their own rights after a terrible encounter with the Maricopa County Police Department. The co-founders of the Phoenix New Times were arrested after a news article came out in their publication about Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
They were taken in the middle of the night for publishing something they believed to be newsworthy and true. After their release, Lacey and Larkin filed a suit against the county. This resulted in them being awarded $3.75 million for the unwarranted arrest, money they have big plans for.
Lacey and Larkin decided to create the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This fund would be targeted at helping disenfranchised groups of the migrant community. Lacey and Larkin are adamant that they will be supporting groups with the fund that are dedicated to advocating for human rights, as well as freedom of speech and community participation within their state of Arizona. Since there is a significant stereotype surrounding immigrants, saying that their behavior may be violent, the Arizona Justice Project knows that they may have their hands full. However, they believe that the basic human rights that these people are seeing violated every single day is worth the effort that they put into their work.
To pursue their work, this organization works with law schools in Arizona and pro-bono lawyers. They will also work with special investigators that help them gather evidence.
This hard work and dedication requires very detailed planning. With funding from a project like the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, groups such as this can expand and help more people. Currently, this organization is working on 36 cases, with more donations and awareness it is possible they could help even more at one time.
Through Lacey and Larkin’s experience, they have found what really matters the most, helping your fellow man.
