For over 90 years now the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has devoted itself to uphold the rights and liberties of individuals as provided for by the Constitution and the law of the United States of America. It has ensured that individuals are protected in times of detentions. The organization has more than two million members as well as activists and supporters. ACLU is an institution that has dedicated itself to fight for the rights of every individual across the nation and in the 50 states.

The organization was started in the year 1920 by several activists among them Roger Baldwin. Then, thousands of activists were rotting in jail for dishing out literature materials that spoke against the war. During this time, the free speech claims were not yet upheld by the Supreme Court. It was a regular thing to have the state authorizing violence against the African-Americans.

The LGBT people were not considered to have any rights. Women did not have the right to vote. They earned this right in August that year. The ACLU does not support individual organizations because it is in total agreement with them, but rather defend the rights enshrined in the Constitution on the right to free expression and assembly. The organization does not only work to change policies, but it also aims to change the hearts and minds of many. The funds to run the activities of ACLU do not come from the government but rather from the members’ dues as well as contributions made by individuals and private foundations. The association is nonpartisan and has its headquarters in New York City.

For over 25 years now, ACLU has been fighting on behalf of immigrants. It has challenged the laws that denied immigrants entry to the courts and those that sent the immigrants to indefinite detention. It has dedicated itself to ensuring that discrimination against individuals by their nationality is done away with.

Residents of the 50 states that ACLU operates in have benefited from the civic education that is provided to them. The organization also challenged all the anti-immigrant laws that used to be enforced by the agencies on behalf of the immigrants.

Michael together with his counterpart Jim were arrested and jailed on the midnight of 18th October 2007 by a county Sherriff Joe Arpaio for having let it be known that there existed the court proceedings on an article about the sheriff. The duo dedicated their career defending their First Amendment right and finally prevailed at the Supreme Court. They were thus given a total of $3.75 million as a settlement.

They amazingly dedicated the amount to migrant organizations in Arizona. Through the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, all groups that champion for the freedom of speech, civil rights as well as the migrants rights will benefit. The two are co-founders of Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media.
