Betsy DeVos has taken it upon herself to be an education reformer. At Calvin College, she took to campus politics and has made it a part of her life ever since. For three decades Betsy DeVos has headed up numerous campaigns and committees. She served for six years as a Michigan Republican Party chairman. Bringing reform is a tendency that her family embraces. Dick DeVos, her husband, ran for the Republican governorship in 2006.

Betsy DeVos and her husband are quite involved in politics. She is politically active as ever, and continue to work toward finding innovative solutions for what she believes to be problems. She currently serves as chairman of the Windquest Group. The group invests in clean energy, manufacturing, and technology. She and her husband founded this firm in 1989.

One of the biggest roles that Betsy DeVos has played throughout her life is in the nonprofit space. Her charitable involvement covers a wide range of interests. These charitable causes include the DeVos Institute for Arts Management, Mars Hill Bible Church, and the Foundation for Excellence in Education to name several. Education reform is a major interest for Betsy DeVos. She supports charter school education and choice. There are presently a quarter of a million students in 17 states including the District of Columbia that are benefiting from her efforts.

DeVos sees charter school education as an accelerated growth. Charter programs have grown in Arizona, Louisiana, Florida, Pennsylvania, and a result. These types of programs are causing people to take a closer look at charter school education. Betsy DeVos and her family became inspired to push charter school education when they realized that parents want their kids to learn in a safe and effective environment. Many of these parents did not have the money to send their children to a school of choice.

Betsy DeVos committed herself to helping low-income parents to choose the right school for their kids. She started a foundation that awarded scholarships to low-income families. She and her husband realized they would have to do more to help the parents of children who could not necessarily qualify for DeVos scholarships. Now, as the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos has taken her passion to reform education to the highest level.
